Dr. Roland F DeRenzo

Biography of Dr. Roland F. DeRenzo

Dr. Roland F. DeRenzo has served as the Superintendent of Schools of Colorado Springs Christian Schools, Inc. (CSCS) since July 2000. CSCS is one of the larger Christian schools in Colorado, serving almost 800 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade on two campuses.  An independent, non-denominational school, CSCS is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI).  Dr. DeRenzo is also the President of Handprints Early Education Centers, Inc., which has over 150 students from infants to Pre-Kindergarten.

CSCS was named the #1 Private School in Colorado Springs by the Colorado Springs Business Journal. Approximately 97% of CSCS graduates attend higher education.  The U.S. Department of Education honored Colorado Springs Christian Middle School with the Blue Ribbon Award for 2010 which recognizes excellence in education; CSCS was just one of 50 private schools selected in the United States. CSCS was also selected as “2010-2011 School of the Year” by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education for exemplary work achieved by our staff and students. In athletics, over 16 state titles have been won since 2000.

In 2002, Dr. DeRenzo, along with the CSCS Board of Directors, opened a satellite campus in nearby Woodland Park, Colorado named CSCS of Woodland Park. In 2004, a beautiful $3 million building was purchased and renovated and now houses nearly 80 students enrolled from kindergarten through fifth grade.

In 2007, Dr. DeRenzo created the Lion’s Heart Celebration, the school’s premier fundraising event. Since that time, various speakers such as Lt. Colonel Oliver North, Michael Reagan, former President George W. Bush, Dr. James and Shirley Dobson, Tim Tebow, Former First Lady Laura Bush, Nichole Nordeman and Peyton Manning have all headlined the Lion’s Heart event.   The Lion’s Heart Celebration not only raises needed funds to supplement tuition annually, but it also is a unique way to include the community, and is also a good public relations tool.

Dr. DeRenzo, the CSCS Board of Directors, and a small group of business leaders, created an organization called the Lion’s Foundation in 2008. The Lion’s Foundation is part of an overall strategy to change the traditional funding model from tuition-based to a third source model that would make Christian education more affordable.  Dr. DeRenzo and the Board of the Lion’s Foundation are currently working with various businesses and corporations in order to help fund the rising cost of tuition for the families of CSCS.  Dr. DeRenzo has served as the President of this Foundation since its inception.

Prior to moving to Colorado in 2000, Dr. DeRenzo was privileged to be involved in Christian education and ministry at Plymouth Christian Academy (PCA) and Calvary Church in Canton, Michigan for 22 years. In his early years at PCA, he served as a physical education teacher and athletic director.  After receiving his master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling, he became the Guidance Director at PCA, and then was promoted to high school Principal.  The last fourteen years in Michigan, Dr. DeRenzo was Superintendent of PCA’s pre-school through twelfth grade school.  While Superintendent, he also served as Executive Pastor of the founding church, Calvary Baptist.  In 1995, he was named Senior Pastor of the church while retaining the responsibilities of being the Superintendent of the Academy until God called Dr. DeRenzo to the present ministry in Colorado.

Dr. DeRenzo has a B.S. in Education from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, a M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Eastern Michigan University, a Master’s degree in Theology from International Seminary, and in 1990, an earned doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Roland met his wife, Sally, while both attended Grace College.  They have been married for 40 years and enjoy working together in ministry.  They have a grown son and daughter.

Dr. DeRenzo teaches Leadership courses at Colorado Christian University as an affiliate instructor of graduate and undergraduate studies at the Colorado Springs campus. While in Michigan, he also served as adjunct professor at Michigan Theological Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan.  He also serves as the chaplain for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the triple A team for the Brewers baseball team.  Dr. DeRenzo also serves on various local boards and committees and is a national speaker and consultant on leadership development, team building and education issues.
